untitled

Jo Butterfield joined the CIVIC team as the Executive Director in February of 2014. CIVIC provides the opportunity for Jo to fulfill many of her passions, including fostering mutual understanding across national borders through people-to-people exchange and working with young adults to develop transferable professional skills. Jo took a somewhat peculiar path to her positions at CIVIC.  For many years she was in the restaurant industry and also operated her own small business. She returned to school to pursue a graduate degree in 2004. While earning her degree, Jo worked at the UI Center for Human Rights as a program coordinator. In 2012, she completed her Ph.D. in History and a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies. Her academic research centers on the history of women’s human rights. Jo is also a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa where she teaches courses on the World since 1945, Cold War America, the U.S. in World Affairs, and the History of Human Rights.
