Keynote address by Janice Weiner, We are all Citizen Diplomats”
Janice Weiner grew up in Coralville, attended Coralville Central, Northwest and is a West High graduate. She graduated magna cum laude from Princeton, and has a law degree from Stanford.
For 26 years, she was a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service. Her overseas posts included East Germany (when the Berlin Wall fell); Belgium; Ankara, Turkey (twice); Warsaw, Poland; Toronto, Canada; Mexico City, Mexico; and Düsseldorf, Germany. She also worked for the bureau of legislative affairs, liaising with Capitol Hill, and subsequently served as a policy adviser for the American Foreign Service Association. She moved back to Iowa City with her younger daughter in 2015.
Her first Foreign Service assignment was to the then-U.S. Embassy to the GDR during a period that spanned the fall of the Berlin Wall and the GDR’s only free elections. She was then posted to Belgium, and then to the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, where she served as embassy human rights officer, winning two awards for her work. Subsequently, she worked on German affairs at the State Department, before holding posts in Warsaw, Poland and Toronto, Canada. She returned to Turkey in 2005, where she worked as the U.S. Embassy’s Political Counselor. She then served as press attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, Mexico, prior to her final overseas tour as Consul General in Düsseldorf, Germany. While in Düsseldorf, Janice founded two organizations – a German-American business roundtable and a professional women’s group. She also served for three years on the board of trustees of the International School of Düsseldorf. She returned to Washington to work on legislative affairs until she retired in September 2013. She speaks German, French, Turkish, Polish, and conversational Spanish and Dutch.
